I just called... to sayyyy..., I love you!

Hey people of North Village C!
I want to talk to you guys about Meaningful Interpersonal Relationships!

Ok, so what kind of relationships are included ? Well....
1. Friendships
2. Family
3. Romantic
4. Professional

Now, I know that at least one out of the four types of relationships relates to all of you. I am sure that you have besties, a fam, a special someone hehe ;) or a job. You should always try to keep these ties strong because these are the people that are involved in some of the most important aspects of your life!
The upcoming information is very basic, but may be used as tools to strengthen each type of relationship listed.
Check it...

KEY ELEMENTS IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
A. COMMUNICATION
"I just called...to say...I Love You"

-talk to that loved one, your parents, or your boss! Let them know what is going on in your life! If you keep them in the dark, they will never know who you are or why you have had a stanky attitude for the past four days. A lack of communication builds a wall. Now, how can you build meaningful interpersonal relationships with someone with a 10ft wall blockading you!?

B. TRUST

-oh boy this is a big one! People usually attribute this to the romantic relationships and the friendships. However, this stretches to the relationships you build at work and even with those family members you have known for literally all your life! A constant state of skepticism toward others' actions will never allow you to become closer to your friends, family,  and coworkers!

C. CARRYING CAPACITY

-ok this may seem somewhat out of place but it is worth mentioning. Some of us looooovvvveee people and can't help it when we get to know everyone around us. This is a good thing, but it can be detrimental to developing meaningful interpersonal relationships. It is very difficult for us to keep track of friends that come in the hundreds and more. If possible, try to focus on a few people who mean a great deal to you. Investing time and energy can take your relationship further!

So, what's the take home message?
Communicate with the people that you want to make meaningful interpersonal relationship. Trust them! Trust allows the relationship to grow! And remember your carrying capacity! Friends are great, but having too many might set your goals for meaningful interpersonal relations back!
Enjoy !

Healthy Behaviors

Hello ladies and gentlemen of NvC!
Soooo maybe some of you were thinking about getting into better shape this semester yeah? Well if so, I encourage you to do so! Working out provides benefits  far beyond having that shexy bod!

So, for example, working out....
1. keeps you at a healthy weight (Ok, so this is obvious)
2. puts up a mean fight against health conditions and diseases
3. improves your mood! (happy is always good right?)
4. gives you more energy to battle your typical Furman day!
5. allows for a goooood night's sleep (you get to count more sheep!)

These five benefits are much more important than the way you look! So when you start breaking that sweat, just focus on how much healthier you are becoming!

For those of you who might want a few exercise ideas, here a few videos. I have videos that have either a guy or a girl introducing the exercise. So take advantage of whichever ones you feel more comfortable with! Try some of these exercise to jolt your heart rate and make those muscles burn baby!!

OMG, where are my keys?

OMG, where are my keys?
We turned off the coffee pot right?
I just put my phone and palacard on the counter!!! Where did they go?
Did I schedule lunch with him at 11:30am or 12:30pm? We just talked about this...
Did Professor Snape say the outline was Due on the 13th or the 19th?
Ugh what was my last point in my notes!?!?! I just looked at it! I guess I'm starting at a 85.

Ok, so you get it right? Sometimes we all have issues remembering things. I want to give you a few tips to help you keep all this info in your brain! Now, this is not limited to school work. Use these memory tools in every aspect of your life.

So here we go!!  Let's exercise our brains to keep our memory!!

1) ACRONYMS
Yes yes, this one is ancient, but some people don't know about it or just forget how useful it can be! Crazy because its a part of life at Furman. Basically, when you have a list of things you need to remember, take the first letter of each of those things and make an acronyms for it! Remembering a name, simple word or a phrase is wayyyy more easier than recalling every single thing in that list.
Example:
List: lip balm, apple sauce, doggie treats, icecream bars, elephant ears, sugar, frozen french fries, ionized salt, razors, salt, toiletries
Acronym: LADIES FIRST

2) JAM!
When we have a favorite song, everyone knows it is our favorite song because we know every beat, every word, the artists, title of song, what year it was made, every scene from the video, where you were when you first heard it etc... Rhymes, rhythms, and beats, help you remember the songs. So, just use this same idea and put it to daily things you need to remember. You don't even have to be a lyrical genius like Kanye West to do this!

3)CHUNKY CHUNKS
This method is particularly good when dealing with numbers. A common rule is that we can remember 7 (plus or minus 2) things in short term memory. So instead of trying to memorize a very long strand of numbers or items, place them into categories.
Example:
List: 42389485238522634213472108321710278102973210831028120481
Chunk: 423894-852385-226342-etc
So now you have, 6 or 7 sets to remember instead of 1 set of too many numbers!

4) LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
Ok, so now you have another list of things to remember right?
Take a few minutes to identify a path that you travel often. Familiarize yourself with each of sections of your path or object. Mentally go through each of locations and visualize them. Just fyi, it is important to be able to visualize and recall each location easily. Next, have your friend read you a different list of words. This time, try to create visual images of the words associated with one of the locations.

5) PRACTICE: SAY IT DO IT SAY IT DO IT SAY IT DO IT AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN
Another ancient one! Just do it over and over and over. The more you force yourself to retrieve the information (pull info from your brain) the more likely you are to remember it.

About Me

hey hey hey Everyone!

Welcome back!! I'm sure youz guyz have very different stories from the recent summer months. Whatever it may be, I hope it was an awwwwesome summer break! So, are you ready to be back on campus for another year of Furman's good times? Hope so because for those of you who have yet to move in, the time is creepin' up!

If you are reading this, you are a PROUD resident of NV-C! You are probably wondering who is talking to you right now huh? Well, hello! My name is Lauren Bowser and I am your PROUD CA (Community Assistant) for North Village C! I go by either "Lauren" or "Bowser" so it's really whatever you like.

While deciding what to call me, know that I am here for you, willing to help with any issues you may have while living in NV-C.

Here are a few things to be aware of when you first move in:
1.     You will have information sheets in your bedroom. Please read them carefully!
2.     There should be a small, brown envelope with T-pins. These T-pins may be used for wall décor!
3.     If you come across any damages in the room like…(broken blinds, chipped desks, hole in wall etc…) please go to the link below to report the premature damages!

Ladies and gentlemen, enjoy the moving in process! If you have any questions and/or concerns please email me! My email address is kinda jank because it doesn’t really match my name. So here it is: bowser.dawkins@furman.edu.  Anyhoo, I wish you the best of luck, and I can’t wait to Ceeeeee you guys ‘round!!
